After a few requests, I’m planning on trying to extend some of my patterns into plus sizes. This is new territory for me, as I have only ever made one plus size maternity top in the past, and it was to the specific measurements of a friend of mine – so please bear with my ignorance!
I’ve been doing a lot of research this weekend, and I’m feeling very confused. I was hoping that some of you might be able to help me a bit.
It seems like every size chart I find has conflicting measurements for each size, and i’ve noticed that some brands of clothing will distinguish between XL and 1X, whilst others will simply make them the same size. For example, and Lane Bryant 3X seems to have the same measurements as an Old Navy 1X – that just seems odd to me.
So here’s are my questions, if you could help i would be so appreciative!!
- From anyones experience, are XL and 1X garments generally the same size, or are these 2 different sizes?
- Do you find plus size garment sizing to be consistent across brands, or is there indeed quite a lot of difference between different brands sizing?
- If you bought a plus size sewing pattern, would you pay more attention to the inch measurements or to the 1X, 2X, 3X etc labels?
- This is the size chart I’ve been working on – does it seem appropriate to you?
Thank you so so so very much for any help! I am really grateful for anyone who can give me a little advice!
I am hoping that the first pattern i can roll out in plus sizing will be the Wrap Around Maternity top. If it is successful in those sizes, then I’ll try and expand my other patterns too.
