Nice to Meet You!

Sep 6, 2013

Hi Lovelies!

My name is Shannon and I blog over at Little Kids Grow. I’m so excited to be contributing to this fantastic site! I have a lot of ideas for “do it yourself” maternity wear that I hope will inspire you to create beautiful pieces for yourself during your pregnancy.

Next week I’ll begin posting tutorials, great finds, and lots of suggestions, but first I wanted to take a little time to introduce myself.

I am a mother of 6 (4 boys and a set of twin girls) with baby #7 due early next year. I come from a small family (only child this way), so the large family dynamic has been a great learning experience for me on so many levels. I’ve learned so much about myself along the way and developed an unbelievable multitasking skill set. Ha! Ha!

I learned the basics of sewing when I was a teenager, but I didn’t have the patience to continue. I dropped the hobby early on and didn’t pick it up again until my husband and I had our first child. I’ve sketched and designed for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until my son came along that I began to seriously consider making some of the things that I’d been scribbling down on paper for years. My husband bought me a sewing machine one Christmas and the obsession began!

The DIY maternity clothing bug has hit me pretty hard this time around. The last time I bought retail maternity clothing was probably 9 or 10 years ago. I gave all of my maternity clothes away after my second pregnancy and vowed to never step into another maternity shop again. Ha! Ha! I wanted something more than what was being offered at the time. To me, all of the shapes were the same and the fabric choices were minimal.

Fortunately, maternity wear is a lot more appealing these days, and the prices are more reasonable; however, now that I sew for myself, it’s difficult for me to pay for something that I know I can make.

Thank you for taking the time to read a little background info. I’m looking forward to sharing my love for DIY fashion with you. My door is always open if you ever have a question.

Join me next Wednesday for a great men’s dress shirt remake. Until then!

  • So excited to read your contributions….I’ve been stalking this site a bit lately hoping for some more fun inspiration! I am 7 months along with #5 and I too am vowing not to buy anything brand new but to either re-fashion or sew up from the fabric stash! Congrats to you!

    • Hi Melissa! Congratulations to you as well! I love hearing that you’re refashioning and digging into that fabric stash! Same this way. I am determined to sew a complete maternity wardrobe this time around. :)

I’m a fairly new sewer so I’m especially looking forward to any simple tutorials. I have some woven fabric and 1/4 elastic lying around and am trying to brainstorm….
    See you here next week!

    • Hi Joolz! Looks like we’re due around the same time. Congratulations to you! So, how much woven fabric do you have? Send me an email at littlekidsgrow@gmail.com. Maybe I can come up with a few suggestions for you.
