Sewing your own maternity wardrobe can seem like a daunting task. And even though I sew many of my own clothes, I was hesitant at first. But today I’m going to share a little secret with you, and it involves investing very little time or money with amazing outcomes!
Before I was even pregnant, I made this simple shirt for myself using Maria Denmark’s Kimono Tee pattern. I sized it up one size and increased the length of the shirt to make sure the pattern was going to work for me, and never went back to make the adjustments to slim down the shirt. And now I’m so glad I never did. This shirt fits me loosely when I’m not pregnant and still fits at 20 weeks pregnant! I used a cotton polyester spandex blend knit fabric for this shirt.
And the best thing about this shirt is that the pattern is free! All you have to do is subscribe to Maria Denmark’s newsletter and you’ll receive the pattern in your inbox. The Kimono Tee comes in sizes XS – 4XL.
Another one of my (new) favorite free patterns is from Blank Slate Patterns. If you become a member of their Facebook group, you can download the Blanc Tee pattern for free. The pattern itself is very similar to the Kimono Tee – it’s a sleeveless shirt with three stitches and hemming. But the neckline and fit are a bit different, so you might prefer one over the other. The Blanc Tee comes in sizes XXS – 3XL.
I sized up one size and added four inches to the middle of the pattern. Ruching would be another great addition to this shirt, but I left it alone for now. For this shirt I used a cotton polyester spandex blend knit fabric.
Both of these shirts are very simple sews; they each took me less than 20 minutes to sew and approximately an hour total, including pattern piecing and cutting the fabric. They are also free patterns! Have I told you I love a good free pattern?!
So, there you have it – the quickest way to begin your maternity wardrobe? Start with a free pattern that only takes one hour from start to finish. In one night you could have 2-3 new shirts that make you feel great about being pregnant!
